Understanding GPT Agent's functionalities and applications across industries

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are evolving rapidly--revolutionizing several sectors and departments.

You may have used or heard about tools like ChatGPT. This tool completes only one task at a given time - taking input for a search and returning an output.

GPT Agents are more than that. They think beyond that and produce human-like responses by using advanced algorithms. GPT Agents, also known as autonomous agents or intelligent agents, respond to queries, events, and states independent of the original query that the user asks. They generate responses until they satisfy the user's intent and answer the question.

What are GPT agents?

GPT (Generative Pre-trained transformer) is a core deep-learning and machine learning (ML) that powers Large Language Models like ChatGPT. It is trained on large datasets to generate human-like answers for a given prompt.

A large language model is an agent that runs iteratively and continuously to complete a defined task. They are complex workflows in which the LLM speaks to itself without interruption by humans, making them different from those used for ChatGPT, where you only get one response per question asked.

In light of the two interpretations above, we can define GPT as AI-powered programs that, when given a task, can create and complete tasks, prioritize them, and then reprioritize them through self-directed instruction in a loop, producing actions at each iteration toward the end goal.

GPT agents can generate relevant and coherent answers because they are trained to understand the context and learn patterns and language nuances. Thanks to deep learning technology, GPT agents can mimic human behavior, including conversation. This makes them extremely useful in customer service, virtual assistance, and content automation.

How do GPT agents work?

GPT agents, or autonomous agents, use the transformer architecture to understand and generate human-like text based on input.

In simple words, GPT agents understand and analyze the core objective and come up with sequential tasks to complete them one by one and achieve the final goal.

However, besides this, GPT agents also comprise a range of other abilities that enable them to complete any digital task a human is capable of, including:

  • Access to the internet and its plugins and applications

  • Accessing short-term as well as long-term memory

  • You can use large language models like GPT for answering, analyzing, summarizing, or providing an opinion.

These GPT agents work in different ways. Some autonomous agents operate behind the scenes without the user knowing what is happening. Others are visible and allow the user to see and follow each step.

The foundation of a GPT agent is a suitable dataset that can be used as a memory and knowledge base and to implement techniques such as reinforcement learning.

Here's an example of a GPT agent's framework, with a step-by-step breakdown for each stage.

  • The user gives a task or objective to an agent of GPT.

  • The task is then sent to the task queue, which passes the goal to the 'Execution agent'.

  • The task is sent to the 'Memory,' where it is stored.

  • It then adds context, using its knowledge base. This is then sent to the 'Task Creation Agent' and passed to the Execution Agent.

  • The Task Creative Agent creates new tasks, considering the context and the objective. It then sends these to the Task Queue.

  • The tasks are then sent to the 'Task Prioritization agent', which prioritizes them.

  • The Task Prioritization Agent will send the cleaned list of tasks to the Task Queue. This process will continue until the objective has been met and the user receives an answer to their question.

GPT agents show the ability of AI-powered LLMs by creating new tasks, prioritizing tasks, and reprioritizing them until the goal is achieved. This shows the adaptability of AI-powered large-language models.

Use Cases for GPT Agents

Before we get into the benefits of GPT agents, let's look at their different uses.
